Memento Mori, grew out of research into practices around dying and grieving. The backbone of the series is a group of graphic, low relief moths installed on the wall. Each moth hangs in front of a circle of wallpaper printed with monochromatic original patterns, providing the objects with a two dimensional environment to exist within. In many cultures moths are associated with death; either believed to be souls of the dead or messengers between the dead and the living. Accompanying these are several sculpted locks of hair that reference Victorian mourning art made from the hair of loved ones. Stars Brush The Earth, a coiled dark braid, is a remembrance of my own mother. A smaller group of eyes, ears, noses and mouths glazed in black, white and a greenish metallic tone are reminiscent of religious anatomical devotional offerings for healing found in Italy and New Orleans.
